Press Safety, Controls & Safeguarding
Pro Tech Eagle Eye Profiling Safety Light Curtain
High-density infrared light-curtain guarding for press brakes and equipment
The Protech Systems Eagle Eye is a through-beam infrared safety light curtain built for point-of-operation guarding on press brakes, punch presses, shears, rolls, and forges. Its high-density staggered beam array is designed for close-proximity mounting, so operators can work near the tooling without moving the sensing field back to accommodate a coarse beam pattern. Transmitter and receiver ship in oil-tight extruded aluminum housings with a 30 ft standard range, self-checking dual-relay outputs, and floating, digital, or programmable beam blankout for applications where fixed tooling or workpieces penetrate the scanning field. ProTech Eagle Eye provides OSHA- and ANSI B11.3-compliant guarding that enhances operator safety without slowing productivity. Ideal for retrofit or OEM applications, these profiling curtains deliver reliable Category 4 / PLe safety performance for modern high-speed bending operations.
Key Features
- Self-checking dual-relay output circuit - one normally open and one normally closed contact set through two internally series-connected relays; contacts are verified at power-up and on every beam interruption
- Response time of 5 ms plus 0.6 ms per beam, for safety-distance calculation against measured machine stop time
- 30 ft standard range in clean environments
- High-density staggered beam array supports close-in mounting near tooling and resists nuisance shutdowns from small-profile objects
- Three blankout modes: floating beam blankout, digital blankout with LED display, and programmable blankout for automatic sequence applications
- 20 G vibration tolerance from 30 to 300 cycles/sec on any axis; optional rubber shock-mounted brackets extend tolerance for punch press service
- Oil-tight, water-resistant housing in 6063-T5 aluminum with a minimum 0.187 in wall thickness and stainless steel brushed face
- Output relay contacts rated 120 VAC, 10 A resistive (dry), landed at a terminal strip
- Input power 115 VAC ±10%, 50/60 Hz, 8 VA or 240 VAC ±10%, 50/60 Hz, 4 VA, 1 A fuse
- Five-wire interface to any 120 VAC or lower machine control circuit
- No calibration or precise alignment required at installation, and no periodic realignment in service
- Unsafe-muting indicator provides visual warning when the sensing field is muted
- Optional mirrors extend coverage around corners or across multiple sides of a guarded area

Assembly
- Eagle Eye transmitter module (infrared emitter) and receiver module (sensor array), both in extruded aluminum housings
- Two interconnecting shielded cables - all system logic and circuitry is contained in the transmitter, receiver, and power supply
- Control enclosure with dual output relays and terminal strip connections
- Power supply configured for 115 VAC or 240 VAC input as specified at order
- Heavy-duty quick-mount brackets for machine frame mounting in extruded aluminum
- Installation instructions, beam alignment guide, and wiring diagram for interlocking with the machine control circuit
Note: Machine control (safety relay, brake-monitoring controller) is not included - must be provided/installed separately.
Common Applications
- Press brakes — hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical, including retrofits where fixed guarding restricts throughput
- Punch presses, including part-revolution presses when paired with brake monitoring and control reliability per OSHA 1910.217
- Shears, rolls, and forges
- Automated and semi-automated production cells requiring presence sensing at or near the point of operation
- High-volume bending cells with frequent tool changeover where the operator must remain close to the tooling
