  • A well-designed control station is more than a group of pushbuttons—it's the operator's primary interface with the machine.

  • Before pressing Start, the operator should be able to reasonably determine that no one is exposed to hazardous motion. If the hazard area cannot be fully observed from the control station, additional safeguarding or operating procedures may be necessary.

  • The Stop button should be easy to locate and reach during normal operation, while the Start button should be positioned to reduce the chance of accidental activation.

  • Clearly labeled controls, consistent button colors, and logical layouts reduce operator confusion and improve safe operation.

Ask yourself:

  • Can the operator reasonably see the hazard area before pressing Start?
