FAQ
How is a “tool-to-remove” guard different from a “quick-release” guard under OSHA 1910.212 and ANSI B11?
A tool-required guard is one that cannot be removed or opened without the deliberate use of a tool (such as a wrench or screwdriver), which helps prevent routine or casual bypassing and generally aligns with OSHA 1910.212’s requirement for fixed guarding. A quick-release guard, by contrast, can be opened without tools and is only acceptable when it is interlocked or otherwise designed so the machine cannot operate, or hazardous motion is stopped while the guard is open, as detailed in ANSI B11 safeguarding principles.
