Machine Tool Guards and Shields
Hydraulic Shop Press Guarding
Engineered to prevent operator exposure to pinch points, flying debris, and high-force operations.
Protective guard enclosure shields operators from pinch points, ejected parts, and high-pressure failures on hydraulic shop presses.
The Hinged Door Hydraulic Press Guard shields operators from flying debris, shrapnel, and part ejections during H-frame hydraulic press operations. It's a custom built safety solution rather than a one size fits all kit: at order time, you provide the press frame's overall width (outside to outside) and choose a door height (18, 24, 30, or 36 inches, or custom), and ATS builds the guard to fit. The frame is constructed from clear anodized 40x40mm and 40x80mm aluminum extrusion with a 1/4 inch thick polycarbonate (Lexan) door that hinges open 180 degrees, secured by a simple chain and eye bolt when closed. It's available as a single door or double sided configuration, in left hand (standard) or right hand opening, with an optional orange powder coated finish.
Key Features
- Custom built to your machine: enter the press frame's overall outside to outside width and choose a door height at order time, so the guard is sized to fit rather than sold as a generic kit
- Four standard door heights (18, 24, 30, or 36 inches) or a custom height to match tall or oversized workpieces
- Frame constructed from clear anodized 40x40mm and 40x80mm industrial aluminum extrusion with heavy duty steel hinges
- 1/4 inch thick impact resistant polycarbonate (Lexan) door for full visibility of the press workspace
- Door hinges open a full 180 degrees to the left standard, with a right hand opening option available
- Simple chain and eye bolt setup keeps the door closed during operation
- Mounts to the top of the H-frame press by drilling two holes; slotted 1/2 inch thick aluminum brackets allow left/right and front/rear adjustment during installation for proper table or part clearance
- All mounting hardware included
- Double sided configuration available, with both doors mounted from the same frame and opening to the same side, for presses accessed from two sides
- Optional orange powder coated finish; standard finish is clear anodized aluminum
- Braced to the machine at one point for rigidity, with T slots in the extrusion allowing some adjustment during installation

Assembly / What's Included
Each Hinged Door Hydraulic Press Guard is custom built to the width and door height you specify at order time. It includes the clear anodized (or optional orange powder coated) aluminum extrusion frame, the 1/4 inch polycarbonate (Lexan) door with heavy duty steel hinges, the chain and eye bolt closure hardware, slotted 1/2 inch thick mounting brackets, and all mounting hardware needed to install to the top of the H-frame press. The press itself, its hydraulic controls, and any electrical interlock hardware are not included; ATS's materials for this guard don't list a standard interlock switch option the way their mill and drill press guards do, though they note that customers can contact them for additional customization.
Configuration Options
- Single door: standard configuration, one hinged door
- Double sided: both doors mount from the same frame and open to the same side, for presses accessed from two sides
- Door height: 18, 24, 30, or 36 inches standard, or a custom height
- Opening side: left hand (standard) or right hand
- Finish: clear anodized aluminum (standard) or orange powder coated
Materials & Construction
- Clear anodized 40x40mm and 40x80mm aluminum extrusion frame, with an optional orange powder coated finish
- 1/4 inch thick impact resistant polycarbonate (Lexan) door
- Heavy duty steel hinges
- Slotted 1/2 inch thick aluminum mounting brackets
Applicable Safety Standards
Standards to be confirmed by PowerSafe. See: ATS Safety product documentation for the Hinged Door Hydraulic Press Guard, section to be confirmed.
Guard Door Doesn't Stay Closed / Latch Fails
Chain and eye bolt closure won't hold the door shut
- Confirm the chain is properly hooked to the eye bolt and isn't stretched or damaged
- Check that the eye bolt is still securely mounted to the frame
- Verify the door hasn't sagged on its hinges, which can misalign the chain and eye bolt
- Replace worn or damaged chain and eye bolt hardware promptly
Guard Doesn't Provide Adequate Table or Part Clearance
Door or frame contacts the workpiece, tooling, or press table
- Recheck the in/out adjustment on the slotted mounting brackets; the brackets are designed to be adjusted during installation for adequate clearance
- Confirm the frame was braced to the machine in a rigid, stable position
- For larger or unusual workpieces, contact ATS or PowerSafe about a custom door height or configuration
Mounting Bracket Installation Issues
Holes don't align; frame is unstable after mounting
- Confirm the two mounting holes were drilled at the top of the H-frame press as specified
- Use the T slots in the extrusion and the slotted 1/2 inch mounting brackets to fine tune left/right and front/rear position before final tightening
- Verify the frame is braced to the machine at one point for rigidity, per ATS's installation guidance
- Recheck that all included mounting hardware was used; missing hardware can leave the frame under supported
Hinge & Door Swing Issues
Door binds, doesn't reach full travel, or feels loose
- Confirm there's adequate clearance for the door to swing the full 180 degrees to its designated side (left standard, right on request)
- Inspect the heavy duty steel hinges for wear, looseness, or damage
- Check that the door hasn't shifted on the frame's T slot mounting
Double Sided Configuration Issues (If Applicable)
One or both doors don't operate correctly
- Confirm both doors were installed to open to the same side, as specified for the double sided configuration
- Check each door's chain, eye bolt, and hinges independently; a fault on one side doesn't necessarily affect the other
- Verify the shared frame remains square and properly braced with both doors installed
Finish & Material Issues
Visible wear, corrosion, or shield damage
- Inspect the polycarbonate (Lexan) door for cracks, chips, or stress marks after any impact event; replace immediately if damage is found
- Clean the polycarbonate with a mild soap and water solution; avoid solvent based cleaners (acetone, MEK, lacquer thinner), which will craze and weaken the Lexan
- For orange powder coated frames, inspect for chipping or exposed aluminum in high contact areas and touch up as needed
Preventive Maintenance
To keep the guard performing reliably:
- Inspect the chain, eye bolt, and hinges for wear at regular intervals
- Check mounting bracket bolts for looseness; press vibration can back out fasteners over time
- Clean the polycarbonate door on a regular schedule using approved cleaners only
- Confirm the door still swings freely through its full range and closes fully against the frame
Fault Tracking & Continuous Improvement
- Log any hardware replacement, adjustment, or shield damage, including the machine and date
- Look for recurring patterns, such as repeated latch wear tied to a specific machine's usage rate
- Use this history to plan hardware replacement and shield inspection before damage affects protection
