What are common types of machine hazards that can be mitigated with proper machine guarding?

A machine hazard is an exposure to such things as moving parts or stored energy on an operating machine that can hurt or kill machine operators.

Common hazards that exist:

  • Entanglement
  • Cut points
  • Crush points
  • Pinch points
  • Shear points
  • Projectile
  • Temperature or thermal
  • Electrical shock
  • Hearing damage
  • Ergonomic strain
  • Chemical exposure

These hazardous exposures can be mitigated through proper design of machine safety systems focused on a combination of physical barriers between the machine and operator and presence sensing devices to communicate with the machine controls.  These solutions are created to mitigate against OSHA 1910.212 requirements or violations using ANSI B11 standards and best practices.
